British Standards: Consumer Representation

Both of our Directors have sat as Consumer and Public Interest Representatives on behalf of the British Standards Institute. This representation has extended to active participation on committees working on inclusive design on a National, European and International level. The standards we have worked on include:

  • BS 8300 Design of an accessible and inclusive built environment. Part 1 External Environment and Part 2 Buildings.
  • EN 17210 Accessibility and usability of the built environment – Functional
  • requirements
  • ISO 21542 Building construction — Accessibility and usability of the built
  • environment
  • PAS 1899 Electric vehicles – Accessible charging – Specification
  • BS 9792 Fire Risk Assessment – Housing – Code of Practice

Our Director, Carol Thomas, was awarded an MBE for services for representing consumers promoting inclusive design standards. 

Accessibility and usability of the built environment - Functional requirements

European Standard on Accessibility and Usability of the Built Environment.

Our Director, Carol Thomas, was appointed as a Technical Expert to the Project Team developing the European Standard EN 17210 and its associated Technical Reports. EN 17210 was the first European Standard written which considered functional requirements to achieve accessibility in the built environment.
