Access Audit Handbook
Royal Institute of British Architects & Centre for Accessible Environments (RIBA & CAE)
Our Director, Carol Thomas, was commissioned by CAE to write the new revised edition of The Access Audit Handbook published by RIBA in the spring of 2023.
The Access Audit Handbook was first published in 2005 and expanded in 2013. The third edition is now updated to incorporate the changes in Building Regulations Approved Document M (ADM), British Standard BS 8300 and other current practice and general guidance, including the PAS 6463 Design for the mind. This edition also incorporates wider audit implications for inclusion, embracing human diversity and difference to enable access for everyone everywhere.
The Access Audit Handbook is an indispensable tool for auditing the accessibility of buildings and environments. It offers straightforward advice about undertaking access audits and preparing audit reports in the context of current legislation and design standards. The practical guidance is supported by case studies and checklists.

Twenty-five years later it remains essential reading for those responsible for designing and managing our built environment.
Access Design Solutions was commissioned to update this iconic publication seeking to use a ‘light touch’ in order to retain the essence of the original publication.
