Access Design Solutions | Inclusive Design Training

Velindre Cancer Centre

Caroline Lewis is working with Goss Consultancy and White Arkitekter Architects to provide inclusive design advice for the new Velindre Cancer
Centre, a specialist cancer diagnostic and treatment centre in Cardiff.

Caroline’s role is to provide specialist advice to enable the design team to integrate considerations of inclusive design throughout the design process and continually consider how everyone, including disabled and older people, will be able to use the places and spaces that are proposed. This has included preparation of an Access Statement setting out how inclusive design has formed an integral part of the overall design vision and decision-making process.

Inclusive Design Evaluations

University West of England

Caroline Lewis, Director of Access Design Solutions, worked with the Centre for Accessible Environments and Stride Treglown Architects to provide
inclusive design consultancy for the development of student accommodation at the University West of England, Bristol. Caroline provided advice to the
design team through the RIBA stages from concept design to completion and post-completion in-use assessment.

Caroline’s advice will ensure accessible design is embedded within the design process. Student accommodation will include accessible bedrooms for wheelchair users, and all standard bedrooms will provide accessible features to meet the requirements of students with other impairments such as vision and hearing loss including colour contrast, lighting, visual alarms etc. Accessibility around the site was also considered including car and cycle parking, pedestrian routes and landscaping.

Inclusive Design Planning and Assessments

St George's Concert Hall

Access Design Solutions provided inclusive design consultancy to the Design Team on the renovation of St George’s Concert Hall Bristol. A grade 2* listed building set within a Conservation Area and accommodated within a Commissioner’s Church, St George’s is of historic and architectural
significance. The access consultancy needed to be sympathetic to this.
